Is Your Bank In Trouble?

FDICIs your bank in trouble? The answer to that question could be yes or no, but the real question is “How Safe is Your Money”!  Regardless of your bank’s current earnings report there is a way to protect your money.  The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, better known as the FDIC was set up to protect your money.  At least $100,000 is protected under FDIC regulations.

The FDIC is separate from your banking institution.  From my understanding the FDIC protects the first $100,000 of your deposit.  I personally do not let any of my accounts (at one bank) reach the $100,000 FDIC amount.

A Savings Account Plan for Anyone, Best Savings Plan Around

Best Savings PlanWhen you hear “Savings Plan” many of us think of a diet, and we all know how hard it is to stay on a diet.  However, creating an automatic savings plan can be very easy.  In four easy steps you can be on your way to the best savings plan ever.  This is a guaranteed way of saving money no matter how much you make.

Four Easy Steps to the Best Savings Plan Around

Personal Savings Plan Step 1

Experts recommend saving at least 6 month worth of your current bills/expenses.  Add up all your bills and expenses for the month and times the total by six.  Use CashTrackerPro Access add-on to help you add up your expenses (It’s Free).

$1000 (current monthly bills and expenses)
x 6 (recommended reserved or emergency cash)
$6000

Personal Savings Plan Step 2

Open a checking account or use your existing checking account.  Put 1 month worth of your emergency cash into the checking account.  From the example above that would be $1000.

Personal Savings Plan Step 3

Open a savings account or use your existing savings account.  Put 1 month worth of your emergency cash into the saving account.  From the example above that would be $1000.  At the end of every month, calculate 15% of the total deposits menus the total withdrawals in your checking account and transfer the total into this savings account.

Automatic Savings Plan - Deposited $1100 - Expenses $1000 = $100 times .15% = $15.00

Personal Savings Plan Step 4

Open a money market account or use your existing money market account. Put 4 months worth of your emergency cash into the money market account.  From the example above that would be $4000.  At the end of every month, calculate 15% of the total deposits menus the total withdrawals (included the 15% we transferred to the saving account) in your checking account and transfer the total into this money market account.

Automatic Savings Plan - Deposited $1100 - Expenses $1000 - Saving Account transfer $15.00 = $85 times .15% = $12.75

Most money market account have withdrawal restriction, but pay a higher interest rate.  If you feel comfortable with putting your emergency cash in a money market account you will earn more interest, but you will be limited to how many checks you will be able to write.

Automatic Savings Plan - As you can see $27.75 has been transfer to various accounts, and $72.25 will remain in your checking account.  At the end of the year transfer all but your beginning balance from your checking account to the highest interest rate account.  Using the savings plan calculator at the end of the year your checking account balance will be $1867.00.  Therefore $867 should be transferred to your money market account.

Take a look at your account balances over a period of three months, based on the following monthly totals:
Monthly Savings Deposit of $1100
Monthly Expenses of $1000 (leaving $100)
Saving Account Interest of 2.96% (ING Saving Account Interest Rate as of 7/3/08)
Money Market Account Interest of 3.35% (Ing Orange Electric Account Interest Rate as of 7/3/08)

Use the Savings Plan Calculator below to tailor your Personal Savings Plan

Beginning Balances:
Checking Account $1000.00, Saving Account $1000.00, Money Market Account $4000.00

    Checking    Saving       Money Market
1  $1072.25   $1017.50   $4023.95
2  $1144.50   $1032.55   $4036.77

Did you know your body is a weapon!Kick to the groin

When you think of your body as a weapon my first thought is a kick to the “you know what” (groin), but here’s how other parts of our body can be used to protect ourselves.  Biting with the teeth can be very painful, however with diseases running rampant, do this when all else fails.  Scratching with your finger nails is a great way to inflict pain.  Although some women can not throw a punch to knot a person out (TKO), a quick elbow to the face or mid-section always works.  Kicking and kneeing is also a way to bring an attacker to there knees.

Self protection with your keysProduct geared to protecting yourself:

  •
    •
      • Pepper spray - Also know as tear gas or mace, is used to affect your attackers vision, giving you a chance to escape.
      • Keys - Use keys with a punch to the eyes.
      • Cell Phone - Dial 911 even if you can’t talk.

Please feel free to add other useful tips to help women protect themselves!

Are You Going To Buy the iPhone 3G?

iPhone 3GOn July 11 the iPhone 3G will be available.  The word on the street is that buyers will be required to activate the iPhone 3G before leaving the store.  The reason for this requirement stems from the previous launch of the iPhone.  Apparently, some people who purchased the iPhone didn’t activate the phone with AT&T but unlocked the iPhone and used it on other networks.

In the effort of reducing long lines, AT&T is reported to make avaliable an online plan agreement, which buyers will be able to complete before arriving at the store.  The other alternative that is being discussed, is  allowing buyers to sign the 2-year agreement at the store and then go home to pick their new plan online.

The iPhone 3G promises to be twice as fast for half the price, which starts at $199.  Here are some of the new features on the iPhone 3G:

  • 3G Speed which will allow users to surf the web over the fast 3G cell network
  • App Store provide browsers with innovative applications
  • Maps with GPS finds, get and tracks your location along your route
  • Microsoft Exchange (iPhone in Enterprise) provides email, calendar, and contact with the ActiveSync

Are you going to buy the iPhone 3G?

It’s All In the Name - How To Choose The Best Title

How to Choose the Best TitleThe first descriptive line about your article or post is your title.  Your title is also the way search engines like Yahoo and Google display your content.  Therefore choosing a good title is very important.

Good titles will attract visitors to click.  When relying on search engines for traffic — your title should correspond with what you think people will type in the search bar.  Of course some people will click the first index site, but others will scroll the first page.  So if your title is on the first page of Google, you should have good traffic (especially if it’s a high searched keyword/key phrase).

Rules for Good Titles

  • Good descriptive keywords in your title
  • Limited your title to 60 characters or less
  • Eliminate unnecessary words from your title
  • Do not use all caps in your title

Freshmanfund.com Your Option To A 529 Plan With the Help of Others

Freshmanfund.com

Guest Post by Jeff Frese of Freshmanfund.com

Don’t save for college if you are carrying sizable credit card debt. Even if you had the best interest rate from your credit card company chances are that rate is higher than the assumed 7% return you will earn over time investing in a 529 college savings plan. The average credit card interest rate is about 13%. If you are paying 13% interest on your credit card debt and earning 7% interest on your college savings you are actually losing money. You need to get rid of the credit card debt before you can save.

There are some great and free resources out there to help you get out of debt and start creating wealth. There are several reputable personal finance blogs some of which have banded together into personal finance networks. Check out the writers and articles on the Money Blog Network. A great freemium resource is Dave Ramsey’s website. There are many free articles and resources on the site where you can learn from Dave’s mistakes on how to beat debt and build wealth. If you would like to learn more from him you can buy his book, his tapes or see him in live and in person. Dave’s 30 day challenge for a total money makeover is worth the investment.

Motley Fool also has some good and free information. Here is a 60 guide to getting out of debt. It’s a bit simplistic but it’s a start. Then there are the books. Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Millionaire Mind, The Four Hour Work Week and one thousand other books but these are a good start.

I started this post with the intention of only writing about getting out of credit card debt before saving for college because in the end the high credit card interest rates will earn you a net loss on the moderate returns your 529 college savings plan will yield. It occurred to me halfway through the post that it still makes sense to open a 529 college savings account because you can use my company, Freshman Fund, to invite friends and family to give the gift of college savings instead of the usual junk like more clothes from The Gap or plastic toys from China. Honestly I didn’t start this article to crowbar in a plug but it makes sense, you are still going to have gifting events like birthdays for your kids so it makes sense to shift some gifts into the college fund while you get out of debt.
