Green countertops

There are many countertop solutions. Granite countertops are very popular, but expensive.  Engineered stone countertops offers a granite like finish, but it is easier to maintain than granite.  Marble countertops require lots of maintenance and care, and marble is at the top of the line.  Solid surface countertops are scratch free — meaning scratches can be sanded out.  Ceramic tile countertops are very durable, easy to clean, and inexpensive.  Laminate countertops are probably the cheapest options. Stainless countertops are heat resistant and durable.  Soapstone countertops have a smooth luxurious look, but regular maintenance is also something to consider.  Wood/Butcher block countertops provide a rustic look and can be sanded, but can be damaged by water.  Concrete countertops are pricey and they have cracking issues, but they can be tinted.

Why I say “My Countertop Went Green”.   The ceramic tiles was placed over the laminated countertop.  Therefore my laminated countertop didn’t find its way to a landfill.  Also, by using the laminated countertop as my base, I didn’t have to purchase the concrete board typically used when installing a ceramic tile countertop.  Below is a close-up snapshot of the new ceramic tile countertop.

Whenever you make one change, others are soon to follow.  I also purchase a new energy star refrigerator.  What happen to the old refrigerator?  Well, to be honest I was going to throw it out.  The old refrigerator was about 7 to 8 years old but in good shape, however my salvation army couldn’t pick it up.  However, I was talking with a neighbor about the new kitchen and he wanted the old refrigerator.  I was happy to give it to him, but he paid me $80.00 dollars.

Back to the countertop — including labor and materials the total cost was around $350.00.  So, my countertop went green and I saved money!
