F-22 Fighter Jet Bill Doesn’t Pass Congress

F22 Fighter JetPresident Obama has talked plenty about wasteful spending. Today (July 21, 2009) Congress did not pass a bill that would buy additional F-22 fighter jets for the military. Which means the production of F-22 fighter jets has come to a halt. President Obama said, he will not spend money on out-dated and unnecessary defense project to keep the United States safe. Since, President Obama has taken office he has taken steps to reduce government spending. The F-22 fighter jet bill not passing is another one of those steps. Other steps to reduce government spending has been:

  • No bid defense contracts
  • Limits cost on weapons systems, which has come from both Republicans and Democrats
  • Rejection of the $1.75 billion on F-22 fighter jets

Both military and Congress agreed that there was no need for the additional F-22 fighter jets. President Obama goes on to say –

At a time when we are fighting two wars and facing a serious deficit this would have been an inexcusable waste of money (referring to the F-22 fighter jets bill). Each dollar of waste in our (United States government) defense budget is a dollar that we can spend to support our troops, or prepare for future threats, or protect the American people. Our budget is the zero sum of game, and if more money goes to F-22 fighter jets — than it’s our troops and citizen who lose“.

The man in front of this bill not being passed was Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The Senate vote was 58 against to 40 for.
